I entered a writing contest like none I had ever heard of. Author Versus Author. Initially, I was hesitant because the person who put the website together and hosted the competition simply referred to themselves as “The Commissioner” and stated in their bio that “A full-time day job in a totally unrelated field keeps him (at the moment) from pursuing his writing passion”. It came as little surprise based on the foreshadowing that the contest fell apart before the work that follows reached publication.

Three emails over the course of a few months went unanswered. It is unlikely the Commissioner will be able to revive the contest at this point. I am unable to reach the other author of this story, since Commish kept things unanimous. This story is permanently free, since it would be unfair for me to profit in part from another person’s work.

Despite the contest falling apart, I fell in love with my tactic for keeping the story within my perimeters. I present to you, Dear Reader, Writer Battle. It is my hope that all enjoy the contest and some among the readership rise to challenge!

Writer Battle: Chaos

Carter only wanted a normal life with his fiance, but his supernatural past dredges up Chaos and leaves bodies in the wake.

Two authors battle for control of the plot, chapter by chapter. Can Carter survive both Chaos and the pull of two opposing creative forces?

Writer Battle: The Grind

Jaz is haunted by nightmares of his time spent with the Legion, the military's alternative to the death sentence. He had enough to deal with already, now Ghostkin from A Paleolithic Fable add their own dash of destruction!

I love the Transgressor Trilogy! I've reviewed Fated Sky, Times of Change, and Dues of Blood already. So when E.M. Swift-Hook volunteered to let me do a character mash-up with her buddies Jaz and Avilon in her short, Doubled Spirit, I couldn't resist!

Writer Battle: Head's Up

Headless was a fun supernatural thriller set in modern Japan. Tristram Lowe was kind enough to lend me his first chapter for another Writer Battle!

Thokmay and Acacia from A Paleolithic Fable chase a Ghostkin through time and space with the help of a kadinger.

The run into a headless samurai with messy results!

Writer Battle: Woman in Wolf's Clothing

Brhi Stokes lured me into her fiction with the novel Caligation. Characterization and imagery were spot on and I felt familiar with her city surrounded by fog. I later found out she is a book cover designer as well as a talented author. We began working on revamping all my cover art, including the lovely Writer Battle template covering this tale. When she agreed to give me a crack at one of her stories, I was thrilled. Wolf’s Bane is the final piece in her anthology Out of the Darkness and into the Night and I knew right away that there was a different story I wanted to tease out from its depths and from the shadows of my own imagination.

Can you derail Shane in a Writer Battle?

Think you can take down a martial artist turned author? Here's your chance. Start any story you like, and Shane will inflict Chaos upon your plot. See if you can survive!

Most importantly, be prepared to have fun.
